SOLUTION-FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY IN MENTAL HEALTH CONTEXTS

Building solutions and discovering strengths when working in mental health contexts

presented by Michael Durrant

Interested in how to enable significant treatment outcomes with clients with major or chronic mental health condition in time- and cost-effective ways that are respectful and sustainable?? It is sometimes asserted that Solution-focused Brief Therapy cannot be used in the difficult world of serious mental health. However, there is good research on the usefulness of Solution-focused work in this context. Further, the original work that led to "strengths-based work" was developed in work with long-term, chronic mental health clients.

This course will will present the application of SFBT to a range of mental health issues - eg depression, eating disorders, panic disorders, psychosis.

The course will use clinical excamples from a variety of mental health contexts — inpatient units and community settings; adult and child & adolescent; etc. It will consider how to discuss issues of medication in a way that is consistent with Solution-focused work and how to think about risk assessment in a different way.

Michael Durrant has conducted Solution-focused training for Auckland District Health Board — 200 of their mental health staff, including psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, OTs and others — are now involved in a project exploring the use of Solution-focused tools in inpatient, crisis and community mental health settings. Michael has also conducted training for the Bay of Plenty Health Board and was an invited speaker at the NZ College of Mental Health Nurses annual conference.

This course is not scheduled for 2011 at this stage — but can be tailored for individual teams or organisations.
